- Abstract (DE)
- One of the most significant events of 2025 was the scientific evaluation of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf by an international review panel. Our Institute participated as a whole in the evaluation of the Helmholtz program “From Matter to Materials and Life” within the research area “MATTER”. We achieved an excellent overall grade of 1.2, which represents a significant improvement compared to the 1.8 received in 2018. In this context, we would like to sincerely thank all members of the institute for their outstanding contributions and dedication over the past years. A major milestone was achieved in 2025 with the inclusion of the Dresden Advanced Light Source (DALI) on the shortlist for major national research infrastructure projects to be established in the coming years. At the same time, the financial situation — particularly with regard to the personnel budget — has remained a persistent challenge. Due to recent inflation and the associated salary increases, we have experienced a 15 % reduction in staff since 2022. A further reduction of similar magnitude is expected in the coming years up to 2028. This development poses serious challenges to sustaining our level of excellence in the future. To counteract this as much as possible, we strongly rely on the continued engagement in acquiring external research funding. Without these resources, it will no longer be possible to support PhD positions in the future. In 2025, we successfully secured two new EU grants, six new grants from the DFG, and seven additional grants from other sources such as BMFTR, SAB, etc. We sincerely hope that this level of funding can at least be maintained in the years ahead. After a long break, the HZDR executive retreat was successfully reestablished in 2025 and took place in Meissen. It provided a valuable platform for discussing new ideas and strategic approaches, while also strengthening networking and collaboration across institutes and administration. In light of the current political situation, our Institute also organized a seminar and discussion forum on research and security policy. As a result, the HZDR positioned itself clearly, defining that defense-related research is possible, but only to a limited extent. We would like to thank all colleagues who actively contributed to this important and sensitive discussion. We were deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our esteemed colleague, Dr. Yordan Georgiev, on April 10th. He will remain in our memory with great respect and appreciation. Finally, we extend our deepest gratitude to all our partners, colleagues, and supporting organizations for their invaluable contributions to our progress in 2025. We are especially grateful to the Executive Board of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, the Ministry of Science, Culture, and Tourism of the Free State of Saxony, as well as the Federal Ministries of Research, Technology and Space, and of Economic Affairs and Energy. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in enabling our research and innovation. We also acknowledge the vital role played by our collaborators from universities, industry, and research institutions worldwide, whose expertise and cooperation have significantly contributed to our achievements. Most importantly, the directors would like to express their sincere appreciation to all members of our Institute for their exceptional dedication and commitment. Your work continues to drive our success, and we look forward to another year of groundbreaking achievements together.
